How I Saved Money For Travel

I can’t believe that my Eurotrip video with my face all over it was already liked by 6,100+ people and has been shared 600+ times. Out of all the 800+ comments and 10 million (lol) messages sent to me, I’ve been asked how much I spent for the 65-day Eurotrip. To be honest, I don’t know the exact amount. I tried jotting all my expenses down but after a while, I realized that it’s useless. What for, right? Besides, I felt guilty seeing all of the money I spent for the trip. To estimate based on the amount I had when I went there to the amount I have now on my bank account, I spent around 350k.
Just to tell you frankly, I don’t feel comfortable disclosing my expenses because some might think that is too much for a 21-yr old lady to spend just for traveling. I know other people will still judge what other people do with their money but eh, whatever. Aside from that, I don’t want you to base your expenses on your future travels with how much I spent. We’re all different individuals and I don’t have any idea about your traveling style. I’m the kind of girl with no arte and pride meaning I don’t mind sleeping in a hostel, asking for a relative to accommodate me, and even asking for a family’s friend for a roof for some nights. I don’t know if you’re like that too so throwing out how much I spent is useless unless you’re like me.
Anyway, yes. I did spend more or less (but probably less) than 350,000 pesos for a 2-month of travel and that is not bad at all. Some even said that their relative/friend spent almost a million for a month of Eurotrip.
I saved a lot because I booked a group tour, stayed with a relative and a family’s friend for a month, and then saved enough money for the 10-country group tour. That means saving a lot for 51 days just for me to spend a lot for that 14-day group tour I joined.
Yes, I had the most amazing wine, pizza, pasta, steak, beer, and memories in my life. Yes, it’s expensive.
What the hell do you do anyway?

I sacrificed three babies and bathe in the blood of virgins in exchange of this Eurotrip.
LOLJK.
If I were in your shoes, I’d probably doubt someone’s claim that she’s a 21-yr-old self-made, too. I mean, how? You just freaking graduated and you’re in the Philippines working. How did you have almost half a million pesos to finance your travels?
I’m just 21 years old but I’ve been working since I was 12 making Friendster layouts and charging people 300-1000 pesos per layout. I’m not saying that I still have those money on my bank account now and that I’ve been saving for 9 years for this Eurotrip. However, those that I’ve earned back then I immediately used it as a capital for another business: selling contact lenses. I think I was one of the first people who sold contact lenses here and I got my supplies straight from Hong Kong. I did this since I was 13 years old to 14 years old and then moving on to another business which was buying and selling phones. I would buy a phone on OLX (formerly Sulit) and sell it for higher the price I bought it. My parents who I adore so much never, ever gave money to buy new clothes and things that I want when I reached the age of 13 and I am happy they did that! I was never spoiled and I learned how to hustle. When I was 16, I got a big break writing articles for a NZ and US-based companies. That allowed me to earn 17k pesos a month and that is big considering I was just 16. Sadly, back then, I didn’t know how to save money so I just kept on spending my money to eat and eat and eat. I kept that job and other freelance writing work until I graduated college. Aside from that, I sold makeup and did makeup for graduation. Imagine waking up 2 in the morning to do makeup for 20+ students then heading straight to class and then after class, meeting up with makeup buyers then in the evening, work on the articles on queue. Yes, I am that hardworking and I deserve all the things that I have now.
If you’ve just seen my travel photos and the stuff that I have without knowing me, you would definitely think that I have a sugar daddy or a financer.

…but it you know me and my life, you will be proud of me and you will say that “Hard work really pays off.” You can just go ahead and take a look at those comments from my friends saying they’ve seen me at the bottom and they’re proud where I am now.

Anyway, to answer your question: I work as a Professional Content Writer and Digital Marketer now. I do earn a decent amount per month for me to be able to save and at the same time, give my family a monthly financial contribution. I also have other sidelines such as selling makeup and my kidney. LOLJK.
How long did it take for you to save your Eurotrip fund?

Less than a year. Woah, right? I’m not really sure but I asked UnionBank how much I had when I graduated college last year. They said that I had 80,000 pesos then I asked them again how much I had when I left my last job which was July last year and I only had 35,000 pesos left. I moved to my current job, sold makeup, did makeup, work on freelance writing and in less than a year, I had more than enough funds to cover my Eurotrip.
Oh, okay. So how exactly did you save?
I just like saving and if there’s this hobby, yes, my hobby would be saving. I want to take a look into my bank account and be satisfied that’s why I’m doing everything to be thrifty. I would give you few tips on how I save money.

Needs vs. wants
This is actually very self-explanatory. Do you really need that 180 PHP cup of coffee everyday? Like, really need it that you can’t function without that Starbucks blend? I am a fan of dining out every once in a while when there’s an occasion or if I just want to treat my family but I know how to differentiate my needs and wants. When I went to Europe, I bought winter clothes in Baguio which only costs PHP 160 for a coat! Why would I need a branded item when no one would even care? As long as I am warm and happy, I’m good. I am actually still wearing my clothes I bought 5 years ago because I don’t see the need to buy new ones. If you feel like you can live without something, then don’t buy it. It will just make you happy for a while but it will leave a dent on your savings.
-
Open a savings account
A different account from your payroll account. I have 2 accounts: savings and payroll both of which from UnionBank. I also have a BPI card to receive some payments and that’s just it. What I do is that everytime my employer sends me money on the payroll account, I go to my bank app on my phone and transfer 80% of it to my savings account. I literally cut my savings card so I cannot withdraw my money in it. Stupid but it works. LOL.
-
No credit cards
I don’t have a credit card and neither do I plan to have one anytime soon. I am not a financial guru but I highly discourage spending money that you do not have yet. It feels good to spend your money that is already there instead of enjoying things and having it become a burden after. I’m really not a fan of interest, as well. So please! As much as you possibly can, AVOID CREDIT CARDS!
-
Have a sideline
Or a raket, or a gig, or whatever you call that! Being an employee surely pays the bill but let us not kid ourselves and let us admit that traveling is a privilege. You cannot travel when you do not have money so use all your resources to have extra money. I don’t encourage people to spend all their life savings just to travel. Coming back from my Eurotrip, I am happy that I am not yet completely broke and there is still enough saving for me and my family. Find a sideline or a part time job where you are good at! I love selling so I still sell cosmetics and women’s stuff every now and then. At one point, I earned six-digit just by doing this. Start small then work your way up. It doesn’t matter if you are not earning that much with your other job but what’s important is you’re consistent and you have a steady flow of income.

Know your worth
I’m talking salary-wise. When I graduated college, I have already been working for years so I know that my skills and experience combined is worth more than just having a minimum salary. I’m not arrogant and I know that as a fresh grad, I have to start at the bottom but I know how to fight for my value and negotiate my salary. My savings is 70% salary and 30% from other businesses so salary is really important if you want to save. Whether you are an employee/freelancer/business person, you have to ask for what you deserve. Charge higher when you know you are selling a product that has a higher quality than your competitors. This ain’t a charity, honey and aside from hustling, you have to think!
-
Bring some packed food
When I was in college, I would always bring packed food because my father’s cooking is the best and I love how much I could save. I remember my first week on my first job, my colleagues already started a month before me because I was busy with my thesis thus, I joined them a month after. I had no friends but I still eat with them in the pantry and would devour on my baon. My baon that day was bangus with tomatoes and I can still vividly remember how my colleague looked at my food with disgust while she’s eating her Shakey’s takeout LOL. It was funny and even after that, I would still bring my okra and bagoong packed lunch. HAHAHA she’s a friend now and we already talked about this incident. So yep, bring packed lunch and just microwave it. It’s cleaner, cheaper, and it’s made with love!

Learn how to love commuting
I love commuting! I swear! Having a car is probably the second last thing on my mind (first one is having a kid) and it’s because I love to commute! MRT, LRT, jeeps, FX, name it! I love it! I’m weird, right? Fun fact: I only tried riding a cab myself around 5x my whole life. I just don’t get the point! It’s like 5x more expensive than jeep and most of the time, you can get there faster using public transpo. Yes, it’s icky and people don’t smell good but suck it in because you will save a lot when you stop hailing cab everyday just to go 5 blocks down the street.
-
Be a cheapskate
…but not that hardcore cheapskate you see on TV where they reuse toilet paper (gross but there’s really an Extreme Cheapskate episode about that!). Be a cheapskate that you don’t treat “friends” just for them to like you or you don’t really need to volunteer paying someone else’s fare when you see them in the same jeepney as you. People know me as a cheapskate and #noshame because they know that I value money. When someone owes me PHP 305.50 gurl better be sure you give me that 5.50 or I’ll put you on my kill list like Arya. LOL. I know there are also some guys who read my blog and if you are courting a girl, stop buying her dinner every single time. It’s not needed! Can’t she freaking pay her own bill? You could save thousands by splitting the bill, my boy.

Know the value of money
Many people will say that love of money will always be a bad thing. I love money and I am not ashamed. Money is not the root of all evil but it’s with your bad motives and bad spending habit that’s really the root of all evil in this world. I have lost a lot of friends because of money and it’s for the better. I lend money to help them but when it’s time to pay, suddenly, I’m the bad guy. Money will make you happy, trust me. It will not be the be-all and end-all of things but it certainly can make your life better. If you know the value of every single cent you earn, you will be wiser in spending it and you will also learn how to value every drop of sweat it took to earn that amount. Never be ashamed that money is a big deal to you because it is to everyone and it makes the world go round.
Hats off for our owstarting to work as young as you did! It never crossed my mind to sell FS themes before. Lels. I have no entrepreneur skills then. I still can’t believe haters give you crap about being able to finance yn travel! It’s actually very possible, given take you have a lot of sidelines. Keep doing you, Jacklynne!
just love your blogs. ❤️
Oh I really did enjoy making Friendster layouts. I still remember making those Jonas Brothers layout and it was super in demand! HAHAHA! Thanks, Richel and I wish you the best in everything you choose to do! <3
Thank you, my dear! 🙂
The person who accused you is totally an ignorant! I am a freelance worker too and I agree that you can earn such amount of money and/or even more than that! You’re doing the right thing. Keep doing what you’re doing!
p/s: I use my own money from my freelance work to pay my school fees, bills and other expenses but people think that I have some sort of “sugar daddy” funding all my expenses. LOL!
You’re an inspiration!
Thank you, Anne! Guess some people just have to try it themselves so they will know what it’s like and in order for them to not accuse us things. I’ve been freelancing from highschool to college and I agree, we earn pretty good!
Oh, well. What can I say? Jealousy really fucks up the brain!
Totally can relate! I started to work as a ghostwriter for some companies signing up for article directories when I was 15, traveled to Singapore when I was 18 (got a 1-month job there), yet people thought I’m sort of a sex worker because who would believe that at that age, I can afford to travel alone using my own money.
You are an inspiration to everyone reading your blog that dreams do come true if you work your ass off!
FYI, I want to go back to online writing because of you!! 😁
For real. Online writing is fun! Got invited in the US when I was 17 to attend a conference for the company I’m writing for but my stupid birth certificate didn’t allow me to travel. Anyway, things happen for a reason and now I’m sure we ended up where we are supposed to be. I’m not really affected with the haters anymore but I feel sorry for them. 🙁
Let’s continue slaying, girl! Good luck on our next life adventure! 🙂
I admire you sweetheart! You’ve done so much to achieve your dreams and you deserve it! I’m sure your parents are so proud of you. Keep reaching your dreams! You’ve inspired a lot of people. You inspired me to believe that nothing is impossible. Keep inspiring us, especially people your age. 🙂
I learned a lot with this article of yours. I really need this. Because i am your opposite huhuhu. I spent so much and I cant help but give and give then give 🙁 i will do everything to be like you to save more. Thank you!
It’s not bad to spend or to be generous every once in a while but you have to think of yourself. You can do a 2 weeks of extreme saving then a week of conservative spending. 🙂 Good luck to you, love! 🙂
Thank you so much, Alex. I’m happy that my family especially my parents are so proud of me that they kept on sharing all my posts on their timeline, which is kinda creepy??? LOLJK. Thank you and I hope you can pray for more travels for me.
Hoping the best for you, too! 🙂
Wow this article is a mind blowing….
I admire your wit personality keep it up girl…..
I might fallow your advice anyway there is no age limits in saving money…..
God Bless you….
So inspired by your achievement girl. I’ve been dreaming of my Eurotrip too since college. I badly needed a sideline!
Thank you and I wish you good luck 🙂
Go for it! <3 Europe will wait for you! 🙂
Hi, if you don’t mind me asking, what’s the name of the freelance writing company? 🙂
I am now a fan. Kudos! I bet your future kid will be as wise as her mum in managing her finances. Btw, aside from selling, have you tried investing part of your earnings in stocks or in any other investment thingy?
Anyway, you rock girl!
Content Writing Solutions but I think they changed the name already as I can’t find their site anymore.
I’m not sure about having a kid but yeah hopefully! 🙂
I haven’t tried it and it doesn’t appeal to me, actually. I have to know more about it as a lot of my friends are motivating me to start now. 🙂
Great advice! I’m turning 22, in college and working. I wish I could save but have bills to pay. I love to travel as well and your post inspired me to keep saving and saving. & don’t mind those ignorant comments. They’re only jealous because you’ve achieved so much at such a young age. Don’t let them put you down! God bless. 🙂
Wooooow! I need to start saving right now. Thanks for the tips. May God bless you more! 😘
I also have bills to pay. 🙂 I’m currently the breadwinner of my family but I didn’t see that as a reason to delay my dreams. I know that your parents and family will be very supportive of your decision to travel. I wish you all the good luck on your journey! 🙂
You’re welcome, dear!:)
I am 20 and I am the type to spend a lot. But you know what, I was really inspired by you and starting today, I’ll make saving money as a habit too. I am so thankful that I read this article. Continue to inspire other people especially teenagers. They badly need your inspirational stories. Haha! Seriously, you’re an inspiration. Keep it girl!
Thank you, Clauii! Kaya ‘yan! We just really need to sacrifice for a bit but it will be worth it in the end! 🙂 Thanks for visiting my site! 😀
You’re an inspiration. I hope one day i can get rid of my credit card (might as well cut it na din para never ko na ma-gamit ever!) and that cutting the savings account card, that’s a brilliant idea! Saving up for a wedding, hopefully by the end of the year we can reach our target. 🙂 Thank you! 🙂
Yas! Do it for the love! HAHAHA. Congrats on your wedding! May it be an amazing one! <3
Thank you for these helpful tips! You’re an inspiration!
Hi, Jacklynne! I stumbled upon your blog through Richel’s. Man, I wish I could’ve done the same when I was your age a.k.a. eons ago. Hahaha! You truly lived a life at a young age; your future grandchildren would be so proud of you!
This motivated me more to save money from my allowance. In less than a month, I was able to save 2K which is still far from my actual 13K goal by the end of the year. Ate, I’d love to know your saving tips and I also want to work for an extra income. Where and how? I’d love to help myself especially my mom with the expenses and I also want to buy her a mixer and her needed eyeglasses. Feel free to message me at tintinabunda@gmail.com. 🙂
Thank you, Bianca! :* <3
Thank you, Jae! I love your blog! <3 I don't know if I'll have grandkids, though hahaha. I just hope that I'll inspire people my age and with the same difficult life as me that they can get their dreams just as long as they worked for it. 🙂
Hi Augustin! You can check Fiverr, Elance, Freelancer, and Upwork for extra income! I know you can do it as I’ve seen your blog and you’re a talented lady. 🙂
Why, thank you! Aha, never say never! 😉 With that many social media share? I’m sure you’ve inspired a lot of people your age! 🙂
Hey Jacklynne! This is so inspiring! From what I have read on this post, you really do deserve the Eurotrip, and other people should stop judging what other people do about their hard-owned money. Cheers!

Hi Jack,
Just wondering after the tour you’ve book which is 14 days where did you stay did you travel from one place to another or stayed in one place for the next 46 days? Thanks
Stayed at my tita, cheap hostels, and family friends! 🙂
Yay! Glad I inspired you! 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing!
I owe my parents a lot! Hihi!
Thank you!
DON’T YOU DARE GIVE UP ON IT AGAIN! NEVER! You will make it happen, I swear!
Thank you so much! <3
Thank you, dear! 🙂
Hey Jacklynne 🙂
I really got so inspired with your articles about your Eurotrip. It totally fired up my dream to go Europe before I turn 30.
May I know which are your top 3 favourite cities? 🙂
Would just like to ask also, I remember reading some sites you suggested for freelance works, but I can’t seem to find them now. Would you be kind to reiterate it for me? 🙂
Yay! Go for it! 🙂 My top 3 fave cities are: Prague, Venice, and Bern (but it’s a hella expensive place so might change this soon! HAHAHA)
Check elance.com, freelancer.com! 🙂
Hi Jacklynne! Just wondering, where did you stay during your trip? Did you stay at a friend’s house?
Yup! Aunt and family friend. 🙂
I’ve read your posts on facebook regarding this and I was just so curious. I checked your website and viola. This is a wake up call for me. Very helpful. I must keep in mind all the things you’ve said in this article. Thank youuuu! 😃
Thank you, Pearl! Good luck! 🙂
Hi! I just want to let you know that I’ve never read such a genuine article about saving (I’ve read a lot). Reading it felt like you were talking to me. I’m a fan now! And I want to travel too but I need to be prepared for it. I loved every single tip you shared. Thank you and keep on inspiring people!
Thank you! Best thing I’ve read today!!! I’m so glad to be relatable. Hahaha. Mwah! Thanks for reading!!!
Im inspired and determined to achieve my dreams when i read your blog,,,
It opens new door to the people who lost hope in achieving their dreams, and im one of those people…
Now I can say to myself, if you can, i can too….😘💋
Of course you can! Believe in yourself, Kate! <3
I love you reply here Jacklynne. So many people are obsessed with pro-creating, etc esp Filipinos. Don’t assume that everyone wants kids then grandkids. Just don’t!
How much did you save up for this trip? Do you think 150k is enough for a month? I’m planning to go on a Eurotrip next year as well but scared about finances.
You know what, when I first saw the article about this in When In Manila, without watching the video and reading the whole article, I thought “Eto nanaman, eh mayaman naman talaga to eh, humingi lang naman yan sa parents niya ng pera” but when I was reading the first paragraph of that article, I had goosebumps!!!!
You’re very hardworking! Alam mo yung I also like to travel like u did but we’re not rich and I’m just the average working girl kaso now, I realize that kulang ako sa diskarte sa buhay.I actually don’t have any rakets, I close my online store when I got scammed twice with a lot of money and now, I just depend on my lone job. You really inspire me to save although hindi naman ako magastos sa shopping, kulang lang talaga ako sa diskarte 🙂 Haaay Alam mo after reading this, ang una kong sinabi eh ang goal ko is to travel around the world in a year!! Diba!? Ang laki!! But caption mo nga sa video, “If your dreams doesn’t scare you, they ain’t big enough” AHHHH I WILL PUT YOUR PICTURES ON MY WALL NA FOR INSPIRATION!! HAHAHA GODBLESS <3
Grabe huhuhu wag ka sana matakot sa pic ko sa wall mo! Thank you so much and good luck chasing your dreams!!! <3
Depending on your itinerary and traveling style but do 200k to be sure! 🙂
Tell ’em, sistah!
Hi..does the bank cert that you have to show should come from a savings account or is a cash card account acceptable?
Ask the bank if they will grant a bank certificate for your account. Thanks! 🙂
Hi there! i’m John thanks to your blogs. I know now what would be my future looks like. We have the same story in life and I am so happy that there are still a lot of young adults (like us) who strive hard for the life in the future.
Yay for us!
You’re really an inspiration. I keep on reading your blogs because they are the most detailed. I have my appoitment ready for schengen visa after reading your blogs. Now, I am worrying about my savings, i dont know if that will be enough. I wish to see Amsterdam after the movie “The fault in our Stars”. I will stay in the Netherlands for 7 days and that’s it. I will go back home. I currently have P150k on my account. Do you think that is enough?
And also, for the proof of rootedness, they keep on telling to include credit card statements, but i dont have a credit card like you. I thought it’s a requirement. That was a relief. 🤓
Please reply. Thank you.
Yes, I think that is enough if you get a cheaper flight. Good luck!
Hi Jack, your articles about traveling are very helpful and informative; it inspired me to travel someday. By the way, you talked about your job as a writer online where you earned around 17k/month. I currently have a job in an ad company but I’m really passionate about writing and I still want to pursue it even though I already have a job that I enjoy. Do you know any legit company where I can write articles from home and still get paid?
Your reply will be very much appreciated ☺
Thank you and more power to you☺
Try Upwork. 🙂
